However, the characteristics of the steered filter, such as orientation and scale selectivity, remain the same as those of the basis filters. We show that linear combination with the appropriate basis filters and weights can achieve more. We present a novel approach for sharpening the orientation selectivity of polar-separable filters by linear combination and well-known trigonometric identities which reduces the need for more basis filters with higher orientation selectivity. We describe the principles for and issues with designing quadrature sharpening filters. We also qualitatively and quantitatively compare 4-basis sharpened filter kernels with an equivalent steerable set of 6-basis filters

Retinal images from 10 normo- (Norm: Age = 44±4yrs, BP=122±2/73±2) and 10 age and sex matched hypertensive (HT: Age = 41±4yrs, BP=160±6/97±4) were image processed and analysed as binary rooted trees. Six topological indices were examined: the total number of external (or terminal) edges (NT), the maximum tree exterior path length or altitude (A), the total exterior path length (Pe), the number of external-internal edges (EI), the asymmetry (As), where As = (N+1-2A)/(2A -2A), and the Strahler branching ratio (R). All topological indices were calculated for both arterial and venous trees with NT >4 and, for comparison of trees of different sizes, A, Pe and EI were normalised by NT. Table 1 shows the normalised data for arterial trees. There were marked significant differences in A, Pe and EI when normal and HT were compared, despite minimal clinical evidence of retinal vascular changes. There were no significant difference for any index for venous trees. Comparing R for different Strahler orders showed that neither arterial nor venous trees were self-similar. Topological analysis of the retinal microvasculature may have potential value in the evaluation of hypertensive target organ damage, and in monitoring response to therapy.Normalised topological indices for retinal arterial trees, mean± SD. p values were calculated by Student's t-test.},

It applies strategies and algorithms for measuring vascular trees and includes methods for locating the centre of a bifurcation, detecting vessel branches, estimating vessel diameter, and calculating angular geometry at a bifurcation. The performance of the system is studied by comparison with manual measurements and by comparing measurements between red-free images and fluorescein images. In general an acceptable degree of accuracy and precision was seen for all measurements, although the system had difficulty dealing with very noisy images and small or especially tortuous blood vessels.

    Recent publications have emphasized the relationship between the spectrum of the backscattered acoustic signal, beam geometry, and flow patterns in the measurement of blood flow by Doppler ultrasound. On this basis, we believe that in the future more importance will be placed on analyzing various characteristics of the spectral shape rather than absolute parameters of measurement, such as the mean frequency. The potential of this approach for extracting more information from the raw Doppler signal is introduced by considering the Spectral Broadening Index (SBI). We explain the use of the SBI parameter for measuring flow angle under restricted flow conditions. This is done by using an analytic/computational model for prediction of the spectral broadening effect. By simulation study, the performance of various spectral estimators for determining the SBI from finite Doppler signal segments is evaluated.
